Adaptive optics (AO) is a technique used to correct optical wavefronts that have been distorted by a corrupting medium between the source and the observer. It is commonly used in ground based optical and infrared astronomy to correct the light from astronomical objects that has been distorted by Earth's atmosphere. It is also used for imaging the retina though the viterous humor and has applications for ground-to-space optical communication.
